i get excited by designers who inspire me to experiment with my own design (the little i do once in a while.) i'm inspired by bright colors and fanciful clothing. anything that presents me with something i haven't seen before. (though i can see that certain trends have led this designer.) i love the mix of patterns here, something i've never tried.

just returned from a tori amos concert. like the recent cat power one, again, my third. i enjoyed this one because she played more old songs than new. (not a huge fan of the new stuff.) i'm never close enough to get good shots at her shows. but the lighting is always beautiful.

i'm happy to say there was as much gyrating (while simultaneously playing the keyboard and piano) in her miami show as her shows in new york.

i love authentic new york movies like this. they remind me of growing up in new york - the grittiness, the dialect, personalities. forties on rooftops, the sun rising over tenements. other movies that have the same authenticity are prime and kids, though kids is a bit too real.

i've decided to wear long dresses for the remainder of the summer. (partly to cover some bad mosquito bites on my legs.) i love how the length of the dress doesn't weigh it down but looks refreshing and breezy. and the nine west heeches! i'm gonna have to break mine out.

i spent the july 4th weekend back at home in new york. i didn't realize i missed it until i arrived. everything about the city is so much more crowded, dirty, fast, diverse. it was a relaxing weekend spent with friends bbqing and talking. a lot of talking. the one thing i learned from the weekend is that things never change- and i guess that is comforting, knowing i can always return and things will be as i left them. but also seeing that things haven't changed made me realize that leaving was the best thing i ever did.

i rummaged through books i left in queens and found a book of poems by nick flynn that i read while at eugene lang. although i've read it before, it felt like i was reading the poems for the first time. here is one that particularly stayed with me. (as a preface, i should mention that his mother shot herself when he was young and it's something he explores in this book.)

I don't even know

how a telephone works, how your voice reached

all the way from Iron River, fed

across wires or satellites, transformed

& returned. I don't understand

the patience this takes, or anything

about the light-years between stars.

An hour ago

i'm not big on most trends, except when it makes getting dressed easier, more comfortable. i've been looking for the perfect plaid shirt and i've found it! it seems like such a common and easy thing but really, it's hard to find the right kind of fit and hang. this one looks great tucked in, loose, etc.

went fishing on a boat this weekend and we caught a shark! (a silky shark) i never thought i'd get into fishing but it's serene and rewarding. something about being in the middle of the ocean with nothing but water around you is refreshing.

when i think reworked vintage, this is what i hope would be the outcome - something obviously vintage inspired but definitely modern. it reminds me of what jovovich-hawk attempted but fell short on. i need to work on my construction skills and get creative.
